As the Head of Commercial Property and Engineering, you will lead and oversee all aspects of the commercial property and engineering underwriting operations, driving profitable growth, managing complex risks, and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards.

1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Insurance, Business Administration, or related field or professional certifications (e.g., ACII, FCII, Engineering Chartership) are highly desirable.

2. Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in commercial property and engineering underwriting.

3. Substantial experience in a leadership role within the insurance sector.

4. Strong knowledge of commercial property and engineering risks, policy wordings, and reinsurance.

5. Understanding of operational risk, controls, and regulatory compliance.

6. Familiarity with both local and international insurance markets and industry trends.

7. Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

Strong decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.

Strategic Leadership & Development

This role involves developing and executing the underwriting strategy and business plan for commercial property and engineering portfolios, ensuring alignment with the company’s broader objectives. The successful candidate will identify profitable growth opportunities, monitor market trends, competitor activities, and regulatory changes to proactively adapt strategies, and contribute to the development of new products and services.

Underwriting Management & Governance

The Head of Commercial Property & Engineering Underwriting is responsible for establishing and maintaining underwriting guidelines, authorities, and risk appetite. They will ensure consistent application of underwriting principles, monitor performance, and implement corrective actions. This includes overseeing policy pricing and terms for profitability and competitiveness, while also ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.

Team Leadership & Development

A key aspect of this role is to lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of underwriters. This involves setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, conducting performance appraisals, and fostering a collaborative environment. The individual will also identify training needs to ensure the team has the necessary technical expertise.

Relationship Management

The role requires building and maintaining strong relationships with brokers, clients, and other stakeholders. This includes representing the company at industry events and collaborating effectively with other departments like claims, actuarial, and risk management.

Portfolio Management & Analysis

Responsibilities include monitoring and analyzing portfolio performance, focusing on loss ratios, expense ratios, and retention rates. The Head of Commercial Property & Engineering Underwriting will identify and manage risk concentrations, develop and implement strategies for portfolio optimization and risk mitigation, and provide regular reports to senior management.

Technical Expertise

This position demands a deep understanding of commercial property and engineering risks across various industries (construction, manufacturing, power generation, etc.). The individual must stay abreast of emerging risks and technologies, provide technical guidance to the underwriting team, and participate in risk surveys and assessments.

  • Underwriting Authority: Delegated authority within defined limits for policy approval, pricing adjustments, and risk selection.
  • Strategy Implementation: Authority to implement the approved underwriting strategy and business plan.
  • Team Management:Β Full authority over the performance, development, and resource allocation of the underwriting team.
  • Vendor/Service Provider Selection: Authority to recommend and potentially approve external vendors within budgetary guidelines.
  • Policy and Procedure Development: Authority to propose and contribute to the development of underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Market Engagement: Authority to represent the company and make decisions within defined parameters at industry events and with external partners.
